Auckland is the largest city of New Zealand. About 4,000,000 people live in the city and 1.2 million in the Greater Auckland area. The city accounts for nearly one third of the country's population. The entire city, together with its gulf islands and suburbs, covers an area of 637 km2.

The city of Auckland is built on a narrow band of land bridging two harbors. It is surrounded by dead volcanoes and scenic islands. Auckland is also called “City of Sails” because of the yachts that sail in the harbors and adjoining Hauraki Gulf. The city has a temperate climate with warm summers and cool winters.

Auckland is often referred to as the world's gateway to NZ. It is the commercial capital and the fastest growing region of NZ. The city has the largest international airport in the country with two domestic terminals that connect the city to rest of the country.

The offices of main businesses and financial companies are located in Auckland CBD and Queen Street area. Auckland is home to about two thirds of the top 200 companies in NZ and one fourth of the world's top fortune 500 companies.  The industrial zone of south Auckland houses the trade and commerce related workforce.  Though Auckland is home to a variety of business sectors, the major ones are bioscience, food and beverage, marine and film.

The main industrial hub of Greater Auckland is situated in the South East area of Auckland city that borders the Tamaki river estuary and Manukau harbor.

The regional economic development agency of Auckland is AucklandPlus. It is a part of the Economic Development Association of New Zealand (EDANZ). AucklandPlus can help your business by connecting you to sources of support and finance, business networks and professional experts. It will also provide you with vital information about opportunities in the local market and ways to maximize investments in Auckland.  The agency, established in 1995, has helped in the implementation of many key projects.

The city of Auckland was ranked second out of 155 countries for “overall ease of doing business” by World Bank. The city also holds the distinction of being number one in protecting investors.  Mercer's Quality of Living Survey has given Auckland a ranking of number four as one of the best places to live in the world.

Auckland has been innovating in the recent past to transform its economy and emerge as a stronger center for business. One of the key projects of the Innovation Project Leadership Group Vision is the Metro project which has been developed to affect the Auckland Innovation and export strength positively in a big way. In fact, the first phase of the project has been a major success with achievements such as reviewing Auckland's innovation system, increasing global networks and exports, identifying research collaboration models, developing an innovation roadmap and many more.

Auckland's economic future certainly looks bright. It is growing at a rapid pace at a local, national and international level. The city of Auckland is growing to become an internationally competitive city and is in the process of establishing itself as a major global player of the future world economy.
